Amara Raja Crosses 1 GWh Lithium Storage Deployment Powering India’s Telecom Networks

  • Deploys solution across 50,000 sites underscoring lithium-ion adoption in increasing cost effectiveness and signalling scale in energy transition
  • This milestone positions Amara Raja as the leader in the country’s telecom battery segment with over 35% cumulative market share

National, 21st April 2026: Amara Raja Energy & Mobility has become among the first company in India to cross 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of cumulative lithium energy storage deployment in the telecom sector, spanning approximately 50,000 sites nationwide. The milestone has helped the company cement its position as a market leader in the telecom battery segment with 35% cumulative market share.’ The solution deployed over four years in conditions ranging from extreme heat to geographically dispersed and unmanned locations, the milestone reflects scale across one of the most demanding operating environments.

Operating across nearly 750,000 base stations, the telecom sector demands reliable power across geographically dispersed and high-temperature environments. Over the past decade, Amara Raja has partnered with leading tower infrastructure providers to transition networks from diesel generators to lead-acid batteries and now to lithium-based storage systems in conditions ranging from extreme heat to remote and unmanned locations. This progression has delivered longer lifecycle, lower maintenance, and superior performance under Indian conditions, leading to
significant reduction in cost of ownership.

The milestone comes amid one of the world’s fastest 5G rollouts, with over 5 lakh base stations already deployed and services covering nearly all districts and up to 85% of the population. As telecom networks scale rapidly to support over a billion subscribers and rising data consumption, power requirements at the tower level are fundamentally changing. The shift towards compact, high-efficiency lithium storage is becoming increasingly critical, positioning energy storage not merely as a support function, but as a foundational layer of India’s digital infrastructure. Lithium storage is now approaching cost parity with conventional technologies, while delivering clear advantages in operational efficiency and site-level performance, making the technology transition compelling for tower operators at scale.

Harshavardhana Gourineni, Executive Director, ARE&M, added, “The 1 GWh deployment serves as a proof point for lithium storage scalability under Indian conditions, addressing what has historically been a key barrier to wider adoption across the tower ecosystem. We at Amara Raja are positioned to be the key partner for the next phase of the country’s telecom infrastructure build-out.”

M.M. Venkata Krishna, Business Head – Industrial Batteries, ARE&M, said, “This achievement is not just an operating milestone, but more importantly, it establishes a foundation for what comes next. The scale, systems, and customer relationships we have built within telecom position us well to deepen our presence as 5G deployment accelerates and power demands at the tower level continue to grow.”

India is the world’s second-largest telecommunications market as of 2025. As operators scale to meet this market need, reliable energy infrastructure becomes as critical as the networks themselves. Amara Raja’s 1 GWh deployment demonstrates it is ready to power that growth.
